Brenda Kay Smith Payne passed away peacefully on January 5, 2022, at MD Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston, Texas, surrounded by her sons and loving husband of fifty-two years. She died from complications associated with Myelodysplastic Syndrome. She was 74 years old.
Brenda was born on August 7, 1947, in Bastrop, Louisiana. She attended Fair Park High School and Northeast Louisiana University, where she was an honors graduate and a member of Phi Mu sorority. She received her degree in secondary education and taught for many years at several schools, lastly Captain Shreve.
Brenda was a lifelong resident of Shreveport, LA and was a longstanding and faithful member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and later Summer Grove Baptist Church. She married Jim Payne in the summer of 1969 and gave birth to five sons who she loved dearly and raised with a firm but loving hand. She was a kind and caring mother and wife and she took great joy in serving other people and her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was a wonderful cook and nothing made her happier than getting her large family together for holidays, birthdays, and numerous other celebrations. She also loved spending time with her mother and collecting and selling antiques. She and Jim also enjoyed travelling the country in their motor home and meeting up with their motor home friends. She cherished her faith throughout her life. Her love of God, her courage, and the thoughtful prayers of numerous friends and family members sustained her during her final days.
Brenda was preceded in death by her parents, William Charles Smith and Maxine Terral, her brother Douglas Charles Smith, and her beloved son Kelly Blanton Payne.
Left to cherish her memory are a host of family and friends, including her husband James (“Jim”) Carl Payne, her sister Joan Hammons and husband Lee, her four sons and their wives, Ken and Karen Payne, Kyle and Rachel Payne, Keith and Kristy Payne, and Kevin and Casey Payne, along with her fifteen grandchildren, Allison, James Richard, Gracie, Elizabeth, Blanton, Catherine, Mary Alice, Henry, Seth, Will, Jacob, Caleb, Thatcher, Sadie, and Chandler. Her grandsons will also serve as her pallbearers.
There will be a visitation at Osborn Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, from 5:00-8:00 PM. There will be a private graveside service for family at a later date. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at MD Anderson for their care and compassion. The family requests that memorials be made in lieu of flowers to the charity of your choice.
