Henry G. Merrells

1947 ~ 2021 (age 73)


Deacon Henry Gene Merrells was born on October 27, 1947 in Monroe, Louisiana to Hattie Mills Merrells who preceded him in death. Henry made the transition from life to Glory at his home in Bossier City on March 18, 2021.

Henry graduated from Waverly High School. After high school, he attended Southern University in Baton Rouge where he was a proud member of the world famous Southern University Marching Band the “Human Jukebox”.   Henry later joined the United States Marine Corps. Henry served in the Vietnam War Until he was injured. Henry was awarded a purple heart for his service.

Henry married the late Rebecca Eaton Merrells and moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he lived and worked for Spiral Metals for many years. Henry later moved to Shreveport, Louisiana where he worked for The Salvation Army for many years. He married his current wife of 22 years, Emma Merrells.  Henry accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church in Crowville, Louisiana. After moving to Shreveport, Louisiana Henry Joined Harmony Faith Ministries and sang with the Morning Star Male Chorus. Henry later joined The First Baptist Church of Cedar Grove in Shreveport, Louisiana where he was a member of the choir, a Sunday school teacher and and Served as Chairman of Deacons for many years. Henry later joined The Light Christian Church of Greenwood, Louisiana where he was President of the choir, President of the nutrition ministry and served as Chairman of Deacons until his death. Henry was also an ordained Deacon of The Greater Highway Deliverance Ministries, Headquarters New York, NY Bishop Liston Page, Sr. Presiding Prelate.

Henry leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife Emma Merrells, Two daughters Shakira Merrells, Tamara Jackson (Thomas); five sons Maurice Merrells(Gena), Robert Hall, Fredrick Jones, and Shawn Eaton (Connie) and Johnny Turner, Jr. (Josie). Seven grandchildren Mya, Kyle, Amari, Koren, Joshua, Dashia and Trakilah . One sister Earnestine Woods, one step-sister Gloria Young, one brother Herod Collins, Jr. and one step-brother Sam Young (Janice) and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
