She leaves her sons, Dr. Michael Semon of Birmingham, AL, Russell Semon and wife, Kathy of Shreveport, LA; her daughter, Bethani Funderburk and husband, Ed of Fort Worth, TX and Terry Semon of Shreveport, LA; as well as her nine grandchildren – Madelyn Oaks, Josiah Funderburk, Micah Paul Semon, Sarah-Katherine Semon, Levi Funderburk, Christian Semon, Leighton Semon, Cameron Semon and McKenlea Semon; and three great-grandchildren.
Grace was born in Rutledge, Maryland and graduated with the class of 1955 from Bel Air High School in Bel Air, MD. She met and married the love of her life, Harold Semon at the age of 21. Their first son was born in MD. Shortly after his birth, they moved to Shreveport, LA where they had three other children. She was a devoted mother, blessing her family with her considerable homemaking skills, from sewing her boys suits and matching dresses for her and her daughter to making sure the family enjoyed homemade gumbo every New Year’s Day (even though she never ate it). She was the consummate homemaker.
Grace also enjoyed various careers. In her early twenties she enjoyed being a hairstylist. She served in an assistant role on the staff of several churches in the area including Caddo Heights Baptist Church and Emmanuel Baptist Church. In 1986 she received her real estate license and worked for Spiegener Real Estate for several years. She also served as Legislative Assistant to State Representative B.L. “Buddy” Shaw.
Though she enjoyed her various careers, her role ministering through Sunday School and other Bible studies / church activities was near to her heart. Throughout her years in Shreveport, she attended and served at Baron Road Baptist, Haynes Avenue Baptist, Ingleside Baptist, Woodlawn Baptist, Calvary Baptist Church, Summer Grove Baptist Church and Springs of Grace.
Her favorite hobby was painting at which she excelled. She enjoyed every moment she spent painting with her friends Margaret Wilson and Bernice Warren. Later in life she was thrilled to be taught by renowned artist, Don Edwards.
She was faithful throughout her life with the things God entrusted to her, and we are certain she’s heard, “Well done my good and faithful servant.”
