Raymond I Cotton, Sr.
Funeral Services for Mr. Raymond Cotton, Sr. will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 30, 2022; in the Chapel of Benevolent Funeral Home. Family hour will be Friday from 6-7 pm.
Raymond Cotton, Sr. was born on June 6, 1936, in Minden, Louisiana. He was a member of Webster High Class of 1954. He attended and graduated from Southern University, Baton Rouge in 1958, with a Bachelor's Degree in Art Education and received his Master of Fine Arts Degree from Louisiana Tech University in 1971.
Raymond pledged the Beta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and remained active in the Rho Omega Chapter in Shreveport, Louisiana until his health begin to fail. He truly embodied "friendship is essential to the soul."
While attending Southern University, he met and married Sylvia Nelson Cotton. To this union, two children were born – Karen Cotton Gross and Raymond Cotton, Jr. Raymond also had an older son – Roderick Williams.
In 1965 he moved to Shreveport and worked as an Art Teacher at J. S. Clark Junior High School and later taught Mathematics in the Caddo Parish School System from 1971 until his retirement in May 1988. Raymond was an accomplished artist both in the classroom and his personal life. In July of 1968, Raymond and two other artists participated in a Three-man art exhibit at Pierremont Mall in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Raymond leaves to mourn - his son Roderick Williams (New York, New York); his daughter Karen Cotton-Gross (Ricki), Washington, D.C; and his son Raymond Cotton Jr. (Lolethia) Baton Rouge, Louisiana; his sister Gloria Jean Cotton Davis Minden, Louisiana; eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one niece, two nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
